Try your Vibroplex with BEST BENT WIRE TREE and really swing it.
Used to use this in the mid/late 50s with the Russian station over the Pole....during the cold war and they  couldn't work us. But they always answered this with 2 dots., so we all knew they were there.
This was before electronic keyers - and we lost all the individuality.
QTH  78N 103W..... how's that for a quiet spot ?
