Well, I didn't have the same luck that Garry had this morning, but MP was
pretty decent in late afternoon, possibly along with a companion I couldn't
quite identify.

QRN was stronger than I figured it would be today, averaging a little over
S5 on 185.3 (where I didn't see anyone), around S6 on 137, and well over S7
at 72 kHz. This distribution is a good indication the lightning was not
within 50 miles, say, but more likely around 400 miles distant, where the
groundwave attenuation would affect the higher frequencies by that much more
than the lower ones.

Unfortunately, the static was enough to obliterate anyone at 72.4 almost
entirely. A couple of times I saw what I thought might be dots starting on
72.400, but they never went anywhere.

The HiFER watering hole was productive, with EH the strongest in early
afternoon and USC the strongest in late afternoon. Also making a good
showing were NC and sometimes EDJ. MP was a bit obscure eary on, but
finally started showing up more reliably in late afternoon. No plain CW
HiFERs were audible at all here today.
