Bob & All: XRS/4 on my NE EWE xfmr....

I started at a visual gain of 40, which is what I can run QRSS60 on at 136~138 kHz band and on XRS/5 the other day to SW on 72.400. NE xfmr/antenna points to a nearby highway (1,000ft or less) road with clustsers of commercial enterprise florescent lights, etc....so I went down to vis gain of 14 and crept back up to 20....
By ear I hear more than 10dB extra noise to NE vs SW on 72 kHz my 18' x 70 EWE with transformers on both ends and grounds tied together (effectively a loop with on side on the ground with matching xfmrs on each end.... If I tune around with the HD-1420 the noise starts to increase around 64~65 kHz and taper off around 78~80 kHz. Noise peaks move around inside that range, some quite strong (S9+) at times.
FT-817 IF receiver in 500Hz cw narrow mode, IPO off, AGC off,
