Warren,
I was using a 500 foot wire on the ground in the woods behind the camp. The far end of the wire is unterminated. The near end is about 100 feet from the camp, and connects to a 10:1 transformer to a 3' ground rod. The feed line back to the camp is Cat 5, balanced, with 2 pairs in parallel. In the shack is a 1:1 transformer and a 20dB preamp into the R75 receiver. Works great at LF, not so much at MF. Up there, I usually use the TAG loop with the appropriate tuning.
