In a previous life many, many years ago I used both the W&G AT611 and the HP3586 for carrier measurements. Everybody in the shop preferred the HP.  If the W&G was free I wouldn't turn it down but if I had a choice I'd take the HP.  I absolutely know that the HP has an external 10mhz reference input and am reasonably sure the W&G does as well.  If you are looking for an inexpensive level meter to use as a receiver for LF work and aren't concerned so much about an external reference, look into the Rycom meters.  6010, 6011,6020, 6021, 6030, 6031, 6040, 6041 etc.  Sometimes they can be picked up very inexpensively - (the top end is at a couple MHZ)
