I never did care for them for two reasons .
One , like Zack said it is a poor way to treat an animal in my opinion
and I have 2 dogs . I have a toy poodle that sits or rather sleeps on my
lap anytime I am on the computer or even working on the bench .
The second reason is that they "might" contain your own pets equipped
with a collar , but they offer no protection from a stray animal coming
on to your property , so even if I had one , I feel like someone would
still need to be out with the dogs to watch for that .
Like mentioned a good old fence is a better option .
