I don't know the details about his beacon. I think John is on the list so perhaps he will tell us. The receive antenna presently in use here is the back woods random length vertical wire thrown over tree limbs. I haven't seen it since last winter so don't know it's condition. Since I was seeing some signal from TAG a few weeks back the wire must still be
up. I'm surprised the coax laying on the ground hasn't been cut by
squirrels. I've had that to happen before with RG-58. The cuts were very clean and at first I thought they were made with diagonal cutters
and were intentional. Then one day I saw one of the culprits in
action. The coax connecting the back woods antenna is 75 ohm double braided shield slightly less in diameter than RG-11. It was made by Western Electric for temporarily restoring around cuts on underground coaxial cables. But I'm sure it isn't squirrel resistant.
