I sometimes search the FCC/OET license database for applications/licenses on
the 100-520kHz range.
Lately the number of applications and licenses has exploded.
On closer examination I have found many of these to be the result of typos,
someone wants to transmit say FM on 460MHz and instead they get FM on
460kHz.
I know how this happens, on the FCC electronic form 442 for experimental
licenses you 1st enter a number then there is a drop down box to select kHz,
MHz, GHz etc someone just selects the wrong multiplier from the list - an
easy mistake.
BUT often this makes it through the process to trhe license grant!
You would be surprised to see how many licenses there are to transmit 50 or
100 W ERP in FM mode from a mobile in the 400-520kHz range!
The FCC coordinates experimental licenses with NTIA to look for conflicts,
this is done by an electronic database dump. My guess is that this means
many licenses are granted without being properly screened.
I wonder what the legalities are here also, could someone who worked for a
company that received a grant for 460kHz just get on the air under the
authority of the errant Part 5?
Food for thought....
