Hi Dex ,
That was a great article that I have to save. That was the article that I built my first 1750 meter transmitter from and 2 more for non ham friends . We used our setups for a year or so for our own "private" frequency . It was then not again until about 10 years ago that I put a signal on the band , even though I continued to listen off and on over the intervening years , raising a family , etc .
I do like the idea of a history of operations on this band , done by someone who is a good writer . I started collecting historical information when I started the part15 Yahoo group , and had some nice interesting correspondence from some of the west coast pioneers . I received some information on the beginning and prototyping of one commercial venture transmitter . I'll have to look it up on my other computer . I also have what I believe is serial number 1 transmitter for the band from a commercial venture .
I know that one of the people that I was in contact with had an original Dave Curry rig also . Pretty sure that he sent me photos too . It would be nice to find some advertising literature for some of those brief endeavors .
If you or someone else does take on such a project , I will be more than happy to contribute the information that I have collected . I think it is a very worthy project .
It still amazes me today , how little publicity it receives and how few people are even aware that they can operate there , without a license .
I will be making a return this year from a new beacon location and now have plenty of GPS engines for locking things out at the farms where the beacons will be located . I also have my bench standard , Wenzel , OCXO , that I will be locking the beacon at this location to . I have the facilities and equipment to operate from 3 separate locations in 2 different states now .
I might even have to build me a copy of that transmitter , to put on the bench for display , just for nostalgia :)
