Thanks for the update!
I am aware of the early work, in fact I have two of the AMRAD 137kHz transmitters (ROPEX from W4RI and Decca from N4ICK),
I was looking at the AMRAD website and many (most) of the links to pages on LF are broken, but I did notice that I talk on high performance LF receivers was to be given at the February 2012 meeting.
I hope that this talk can be uploaded to the web site!

AMRAD was quite active on developing LF technology but that work pretty
much dropped off when the FCC denied allocating an LF band for radio
amateurs. Since then AMRAD has been involved on other things like BPL
interference and software defined radios. We are hopeful that the FCC
will not be so tied to the power company lobby and go forward with an
amateur allocation on LF. We are watching for signs of change on this.
