I think your plan sounds do-able, Kurt.  You'll want to watch for unintended 
resonances, perhaps, but if you are able to test a few different materials 
and number of turns and terminations, I believe  it should work just fine. 
I've been doing some similar experiments recently with toroid ferrites for 
LowFER current sampling, and found that the results were quite dependent on 
the resistance terminating the secondary.
