Mike,

I've had good results receiving with a FT897 on 2200M with no 
converter.  I have an original 817 I picked up cheap because the power 
amp was fried but I've not tired it on LF.  I think the two radios have 
the same basic receiver and exciter design.  I really lucked out in 
buying the 817 because I just wanted it for a MW IF and needed only 10 
mw to drive the xverters.  I just plucked out the little final amp 
device and tacked a capacitor across the pads.  I was surprisingly 
pleased to measured 10 mw output.

Nice to see the old Heath converter being used though.  Maybe I will 
power up my old Palomar Engineering converter to see if it still plays.
