[Lowfer] [slightly OT] Spammers

I'm writing this to this group because it's a mailman.qth.net group
and I'm curious about a recent rash of (I think) spammers. I own and
run a mailman.qth.net group, MAMS (Mid-America Microwave Society, on
the other end of the spectrum). Over the last couple months I have
been deluged with membership requests. I get at least one every couple
days. They usually have a name attached. Many of them have an e-mail
address which also contains a name, but it's a different name than the
listed one. Some of the e-mail addresses are just alphabet soup. None
of them to date have had a callsign in either the e-mail address or
name listing.
I am just wondering if other mailman.qth.net group owners and
moderators are experiencing the same thing. I'd hate to deny a fellow
ham a membership in the group, but since there's no indication that
these people are hams, I just have to reject them. I tried writing to
a few of them asking of their interest in the group, and most of them
bounced. The others got no reply.
