And finally for today, a look at MP on 137 yesterday at mid-day, with solar
noon right between Mitch and myself. It was a most amazing session--there
were absolutely NO static crashes the whole time! The S-meter sat steady at
S2.5, the internal noise level of the radio itself. In terms of QRN, it was
just like the middle of night in the dead of winter.
Afterward, I got adventurous and thought I'd emulate Garry and try for
daytime reception of EAR, since things were so quiet. That didn't work out
as well, of course...partly because of the power difference, but also
because some wandering QRM drifted down on top of the signal. You wouldn't
be able to recognize EAR in the trace if you weren't looking really hard for
it. I then tried for WMS, which i normally can see in the daytime, but
couldn't yesterday.
By 1:30 PM, there were occasional minor static crashes. By dark, we had
(unpredicted) thunderstorms in the county--some severe--so there was no
listening here last night.
