Hi Paul I think, without knowing it maybe, you answered your own problem on
the large loop. If you have nearby interference then a look of large
dinension will receive this as e-field induced signal. peeople talk about
screening but at LF a better strateegy is balancing the loop (possibly
grounding the balance centre at the loop) and isolating the feed to the
receiver with a transformer.
The small dimension loop will pick up a smaller amount of e-field signal so
will seem to perform better at the disadvantagee of an amplifier generating
some excess noise and a lowere efficiency. If you return to you large loop
and cure the e-field pickup problems you will probably have a much superior
passive antenna.
One of the biggest problems with LF is near-field noise. Read the archive to
see how Laurence KL7UK killed it on a miniwhip desite being i the middle of
a very noiy Chinese city.
