Some years ago when I ran WC2XSR/13 on 166.5 KHz, I used the program CWTYPE
to generate an audio file of my CW and QRSS data for transmission. Then I
burned it on a CD as a standard audio disk. I played the audio CD on a
thrift-store CD player into a simple diode rectifier. The DC from the
rectifier controlled a transistor which keyed the TX. Cheap, simple, and
easily changeable. Not as elegant as a programmed keyer chip, but much
faster to change and at about the same cost.
