Well, I remembered to un-short the antenna tonight, but I still didn't hear
or see anyone else at 1750 or 2200 m...just EAR and MP, respectively.
Static was around S9 tonight with the buffer. Without, it would have been
well below S3. This is typical of what it has been most of the past two
weeks when there have not been storms within a few hundred miles. Usually,
that's low enough to allow me to copy SIW and WMS, but not tonight.
Several unfamiliar NDBs were pouring in as well as the regulars. One new
logging was HZP (248) Zionsville, IN; another seems to be ORC (521) from
Orange City, IA, although the third dash of the "O" seems shorter than the
first two. I'm going to wait until morning, when my eyes may focus better,
to look them up the rest of them. There was also a mystery beacon with
keying on 521, signing RPK unless my ears are deceiving me worse than usual.
There may be some question about the "P" but I'm pretty confident of the R
and K, though I see no beacons listed on 521 or surrounding channels with
similar identifiers.
Around 2 AM CST I ran across WD2XSH/7 on 476.3 alternating between regular
CW and some FSK or PSK mode every several minutes. Made a nice WAV
recording of both for future reference. Signals were typically S9+10 to
+20, although there was a fade to S9 around 3 AM.
And a first for me tonight--JJY at 40 kHz, loud and clear!
John
