I went to the field this morning around 11 AM CDT. Within minutes I
detected segments of DFCW at 13555.395 and 13555.400 kHz, just as
advertised, but not strong or consistent enough to recognize characters from
the bits of dits and dahs.
NC, meanwhile, was producing dogbones again at various times, and was
audible most of the time. There was fading, both short (cycles of 1/2 sec
to 2 sec) and medium term (cycles of 30 seconds or longer). I didn't really
recognize the short term fading for what it was until I switched Argo to NDB
mode and fixed visual gain, and played with the sensitivity a bit. Then the
shorter fades became evident for what they were.
I went back to watching for RY...just snippets of carrier again, and
sometimes none at all. Around noon, I did another calibration against WWV,
and measured the dot and dash frequencies as still within 0.5 Hz of the
first measurement. At that time, I also measured NC as alternating between
13555.488 and .492.
