Night test:

Running 50 watts at this relatively close distance makes testing problematic. With the receive
antenna directed NE the signal is strong enough that copy is flawless ... with it directed SW there
was total loss of reception except for an infrequent signal peak that brought levels sufficiently
above the static. Condx were quite noisy last night. On the brief signal peaks MFSK16 offered a
small advantage over CMSK31. It's difficult to know whether this is due to 'superiority' of the mode
or that the higher throughput means individual MFSK16 characters are better able to 'sneak' through
the static. Tests of higher speed variants might prove interesting under these conditions.

Day test:

A similar problem exists at this distance during daytime as well. Both directions of the receive
antenna produce flawless results. The 'special test' you ran yesterday afternoon reducing power in 1
dB steps (once near the intelligibility threshold) appears to be the best method for 'heads up'
testing one mode vs. another. It was interesting to see that CMSK16 offered a slight (2 dB)
advantage over MFSK16 under these conditions. Of course it's not completely a fair fight since
MFSK16 has significantly higher throughput.

Looking forward to further testing!
