Niether of my Qmeters came with a standard coil. My Boonton 260 , which
was a gift, had a bad tube in the rf
vtvm circuit. I found one on ebay for $30.00. but unit is not
calibrated. There are several articles on the internet about replacing
the bolometer with a thermouple from ARC-5 tuning unit. Back in 65 I
worked in the QC engineering dept of a TV manufacturer and one of my
responsibilities was taking care of the 260 in our coil dept. A
careless operator went to break and left the 260 on and it creeped up
and burned out the bolometer. Cost then was over $900 for a
replacement. Doubt if one could be found today unless it is in a junk
machine. As is it is still a fine instrument for comparisons. Heath
unit gives almost identical readings, so that is what I use most of the
time.
I have thought of making a coil or two with B&W minductor stock and
mounting on a piece of bakelite and finding someone with a calibrated
unit and mailing mine to them for measurement so I would have a known
reference.
This months QST has a note in the 25 years ago collum about an article
by W1FB in April 1986 qst about measureing inductance and Q. Check
that out in the archives on ARRL site.
