Paul,
My calculation indicates a transformer ratio of approx 5 to 1 for a Vcc of 13.6 and a wire gauge of 12, so you guys are on the money. If this is type 43 ferrite you might be better off with a ratio 10 to 2 or as Jay suggests ... go to a ferrite with higher permeability. Also, if possible, check the shape of the output square wave with a scope to be sure the transistors are conducting properly. I suggest in my second article to measure this on the bench with a test coil having approximately the same L and Rac as the outside loop.
Best of luck... and keep us posted.
Bill

Bill vcc is 13.6 volts( gel cell battery at the tx with trickle charger. Dave
has pictures we will send soon. I am copying daytime at 55 miles.

:
Paul,
What is the Vcc to the final? With this value and the turns ratio I can
give you and idea how efficient the loop is running (assuming 1w DC input to the
final). BTW #12 is a my suggested gauge for a first loop because it is
relatively easy to put up, connect to, and it should put out a respectable
signal. Suggest RG-8 for the next step once the bugs are worked out and some
confidence is gained.
