Hi

To clarify, John G3ZJO has published, with my permission, two of my photos
from www.ancient-mariner.co.uk/photos/SAQjuly2011

Having heard SAQ's 17.2 kHz signal on a number of occasions, decided early
in the year to visit SAQ for Alexanderson Day on Sunday 3rd July. From
Manchester, easyJet operates to Gotherburg-Landvetter airport, so booked
outward for Friday with Sunday pm return. Decided to stay in Varberg, which
is only 15 minutes drive away from SAQ.

Incidentally, Varberg is another name for the radio station. Grimeton,
pronounced Grim-E-ton is the name of a nearby place, when SAQ was built
there were just open fields. The original building used to house two
Alexanderson Alternators, now just the one. This freed up space for other
transmitters, including a Rhode & Schwarz HF transmitter connected to the
large rotatable Log Periodic, all now silent except for two Icom
transceivers and two associated power amplifiers, each giving regular short
bursts of 500 watt. The SAQ aerial is normally connected to the `new'
Varberg Radio's LF transmitter, which apparently is on standby. This is
located near the high TV mast visible in the photographs. Other aerials
including rotatable Log Periodics were visible on site.

I had previously contacted Lars Kalland SM6NM, the Radio Officer pictured
sending the 0900utc SAQ message, he made me and my wife most welcome on
Sunday. Due to a minor technical hiccup, the keying sidetone was not audible
to anyone other than Lars and unexpectedly, there was no sound of keying
audible above the machine noise. I had expected to 'feel' the transmission
as I did once at a Decca Navigator station.
