No attempt to listen here last night...persistent thunderstorms lingered
from 8 PM until the wee hours of the morning. After about 10 o'clock or so,
it was all cloud-to-cloud lightning over the farm, but I didn't want to be
hooked up to the antenna if it changed its mind abruptly (there was still
cloud-to-ground visible not very far away), so I just sat there in the car
and watched the show.

It's a miracle you all aren't seeing our little town splashed all over the
cable news channels today. Oswego held its fireworks display last night
about 9:30, immediately after the worst of the rain let up--but while
lightning was still striking within the city limits! I was horrified to see
that from where I was out in the countryside, because I knew that meant over
half the town was still sitting in the old football stadium and on metal
bleachers beside the field that whole time, waiting for the show. And our
entire fire department could have been wiped out by a single bolt jumping
down the ion trail of a skyrocket.

Next thing you know, the city pool will be offering two-for-one swim passes
on stormy days, and the Little League teams will all be encouraged to wave
their aluminum bats in the air for luck when lightning is present.
