The E4-B planes that were put into service during the 70s had had
massive tunning units for the trailing wire VLF antenna. I got a chance
to see the comm gear on one of these planes at Andrew AFB. For about 6
years I operated one of the UHF GEPs (ground entry points) that provided
circuits to the planes which was relayed to submarines.

Hi Dex,
That sounds like you have had some neat experience operating
one of the ground stations for the airborne VLF transmitter planes
and also got to see the gear used in the plane. I am sure they
are probably using different planes nowadays?

Also wonder do you think it would be possible to find a program
somewhere that would enable someone to decode the narrow 50Hz
shift RTTY still used on some VLF transmitters? It might be interesting to
try 50Hz shift RTTY on 600 meters or 137KHz and see how it compares to
170Hz shift RTTY?

It sounds like the U.K. VLF transmitter on 22.1KHz is still sending 50Hz
shift
RTTY and the Russian RDL transmissions on 18.1KHz sound like
50Hz shift RTTY. I think there are some other signals below 100KHz
that are using 50Hz shift RTTY.

I am sure they are probably sending in code groups but it would be fun
to see an actual decode of a VLF transmitter off the air.

Thanks - 73 Todd WD4NGG
