We have a local contesting club that had a station out in the country
a few miles south of town. The building was a ramshackle 2-story house
owned by the University of Illinois. They let us use one small room in
it. The best thing was we had a tribander on a tower at 120 feet and
dipoles for 40 and 80 at about 80 feet. I don't have a beam at home so
I made frequent trips there.
The building had electricity but no running water and no heat. It got
really cold in there in the winter. We used space heaters to try to
heat it but when I was there by myself, usually about the time it
started getting warm I had to leave.
It's hard to send CW when it's 20 degrees and your fingers don't work!
