[Lowfer] How far away can lightening cause QRN ??

Merry Christmas everyone:
 
Reception conditions were deplorable here last night.. I had static crashes averaging S-7, and
peaking ocassionally to +5 over S-9 in a 500 Hz BW.. There was nothing of any consequence
showing in the US on the lightening map, but looking at the WWLN map; Cuba had heavy lightening,
and all of Northern South America was inundated with lightening.. Just for the record; I checked all
my antenna connections, and nothing was loose.. How many miles can lightening static carry ???
