CME has hit
Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab report a strong compression of Earth's magnetosphere in response to the CME impact. "Simulations indicate that the magnetopause separating magnetospheric and solar wind plasma is close to the geosynchronous orbit starting at about 19:20 UT on August 5th. Spacecraft [in these] orbits may be directly exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic field."

Just noticed Bz has a -20 nT southward tilt right now and the solar wind is
whipping along at 600 km/s, so there's probably quite a nice display going
on over the night side of the planet. While typing, I also see that ACE
confirms arrival of the CME and the Goddard Space Weather Lab advises that
the magnetopause has been compressed so much that satellites in synchronous
orbit may be exposed to direct solar wind plasma this afternoon.
Take your lead-lined umbrella if headed for orbit....
