Hi Steve:
Following is highly scientific test (?) using AM radio - and walk-around.
Tuned to AM radio station approx 200 kM away - so relatively weak.
Some surprises:
"smart meter - FlexNet model 530X - no problem until within one foot - and then total 100% noise wipes out the entire band.
Water meter - totally quiet - even with am radio sitting on unit.
Surprises:
1 - Within one foot of a carbon monoxide detector - total wipeout of the am receiver - Mfr: American Sensors.
2 - Carbon monoxide # 2 - KIDDE - very quiet - nothing detected until sitting on top of the detector. negligible.
3 -SMPS used on the DELL LCD monitor - total wipeout of am - within one foot - but anywhere near the
ac line cord or wiring to the LCD monitor created 50% reduction of the am signal - due to noise radiation.
4 - Don't go near a KitchenAid ceramic top stove !! - walked by on my "search" and the front panel totally
wipes out the am radio. Highest intensity near the display. ( going to the coleman stove during listening periods from now on ! )
5 - Walked by the VHS/VCR - huge field within 2 feet. Total wipeout of am band - Unit then turned off and still 25% radiation of noise.
6 - SMPS used on Thinkpad laptop - lots of noise at the power supply - and small radiation down the power lead to the laptop
and along the ac cord.
Notes: the DELL LCD monitor SMPS radiated a very strong signal - wiping out the area around 139 kHz - that's using
an outdoor receive antenna. - unplugged the power supply - no noise.
Notes: "smart meter" - It is my understanding that the smart meter is polled - I have no idea of the schedule or length of time
of a typical poll so it could well be that this would not be a problem until or when the polling is done.
Someone else may have an idea on that - or experience with that situation.
Notes: water meter - this is read( as Steve R. commented ) from outside the house by a utility person.... so it's done only
on a bi-weekly basis for seconds. - but it obviously isn't radiating for the rest of the time.
Hope this adds to your study !
All the flowers up yet ?
