Hi Andy If you run wires from the edge of the present top had back to the
mast you will degrade the antenna. what you will do is to reduce the
"effective height" of the antenna. you may not measure much difference but
you will radiate a poorer signal. There is no advantage in broadbanding it,
and there is always a compromise.
If you connect some wires sloping the other way (away from the mast) and
terminat them about 7 or 8 feet above ground you could see an imperovement
because this will increase the top capacity. There is a slight shielding
effect if the wires are angles downwards but with a small plot you have
little option. Ideally dont overlap more than 1/3rd of the mast with the
angled wires....this is an "Umbrella" antenna.
