Andy, there's another relatively simple approach to making an antenna work 
above the resonant frequency that you achieve with the loading coil(s). 
Remember, for transmitting you are feeding the antenna from a relatively low 
impedance source and the objective is to keep all resistances as low as 
possible, which makes the Q of the system pretty high.  For receiving, 
however, you can run the antenna into a high impedance preamp input and 
thereby broaden the response considerably.
