Not a good night for the first test of the new antenna on receive.
Static crashes are at summer levels, peaking as high as 15dB over S-9.
I did notice this... in the 8 pm hour, the noise level was a constant
S-5. That's 2 S-units higher than recently. The average peaks were an
S-7, with instantaneous peaks reaching S-9 to 15dB over. Even in that
amount of noise, I was seeing the twighlight traces of " SIW " I was
really surprised to see that. The signal faded into the noise quickly.
There is a noticable 10 to 12dB higher level on the new lowFER ant.
than on the 160/80 dipoles I have been using. The vertical is certainly
going to pick up more noise than the low dipoles, but what showed me
this antenna is receiving is when I switched over to WWVB on 60 KHz to
calibrate SPECTRAN. The signal was pounding in, with no ant. matching
for WWVB. On the dipoles, it would be very weak, but it is astonishingly
strong on the LF vertical. Not a good night to look for weak signals,
but I'm going to watch the watering hole overnight.
73, and good night to all:
