A few years ago in midwinter, near European sunrise, I occasionally
had trace amounts of France 162 on a Radio Shack DX-399, by taking it
outdoors away from local powerline noise. Location was Tampa FL.
Another part of the secret, if you will, is to be aware of variations in
propagation both on a minute-by-minute basis and on a day to day basis.
A question to ask is whether the reception was done with a "barefoot" set
which I think was the key to your question. Holding the set in the
near-field of a large tuned loop makes a lot of difference. In the case I
cite, no external antennas were used.
