Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I presently have a 77 type
core transformer with 25t to the coax, 75 turns on the antenna. I put
this antenna up just to try something different thinking that getting
400 feet from the house would be quieter. Also because I have several
500 foot rolls of high quality 75 ohm coax. The coax was used for
restoration of buried transcontinental telcom cables. It is just
slightly smaller than RG-11, has double shield of very fine braid wire
and a slick, tough vinyl jacket. It was designed to temporarily restore
service around a cable failure. The antenna wire may not be WD-1 but it
does appear to be the same as what I remember stringing while in the
army. It is has solid conductors that appear to be steel plated with
copper. I did an Ohm meter test just to verify continuity after string
the antenna but don't recall the resistance. I'll measure that when I
make the next change at the feed. The main frequency range of interest
is VLF up to 190 kHz. I suspect I won't be satisfied without tuning the
antenna to resonance at whatever the current desired frequency may be.
That's one thing that has impressed my about LF, resonance rules!
More later,
Dex
