Andy:
Take a look at the following two web sites - and maybe get an idea of combining some of
the techniques from each one:
http://members.shaw.ca/ve7sl/burhans.html
Steve and I have been using the "active" one with the Burhans preamp - for quite a few
years - I have logged NDBs down to the South Pacific and many South American countries,
as well as the Azores..... it is very, very quiet, and might suit your requirements.
I have a 12 footer , and an 8 footer - and both work equally well.
If you're concerned about the preamp - I can send you one !
The other site is Lyle's K0LR
http://www.qsl.net/k0lr/simple-loop/Simple-Loop.htm
and though he just put a fixed capacitor across the loop - it shows how simple it is to make one from coax - - or some remote relays and capacitors ( see W1TAG web site for his remote relay tuning technique. It worked perfectly for me - until I added a stepper motor circuit with big variable capacitor for remote tuning. Still using after 5 years.
Let me know about the preamp.
