Freezin cold, snowing, have a rotten head cold, SWR on WSPR window too
high. Went outside to work on the Windom, and lengthen one end to lower
the resonant point. The wire runs thru the branches of a tree, and I
was pulling on it to loosen it from the branch when; " SNAP " down
came the entire leg of the Windom. It broke at the top of the mast.
I know everyone has felt this frustration before. Repair is an all day,
possibly 2 day job. Every antenna I have, lowFER included has to come
down to the ground to do the repair. NOT TODAY !! Still works fine
from 80 on up, but that's not my interest.160 meters is as close to
600 meters as I can get. And I have become super fascinated with weak
signals on low frequencies, and the challenges it presents.
At least I did have one bit of consolation today. I didn't fry my
lowFER beacon. I had run 160 WSPR for a number of hours at 5 watts
before noticing that the lowFER antenna was still connected to the
transmitter. I figured it was fried; but fortunately not, so " XR "
is back on; slow dit-n and dah-n away.
Well that's pff my chest; gee, I feel a little better now.
73 guys.
