[Lowfer] Flex radio Model 5000

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the advice. You have given me even more to think about now. I
would also need a new computer to use with the Flex. I could stick together
a bare bones kit from Tiger Direct for about $400, but then I'm going to hit
$3K to get everything working. The SDR-IQ works wonderfully on the LF
frequencies. I believe that it's sensitivity is limited by the atmospheric
noise floor. Its frequency stability & calibration are all spot on ...
especially down below 1 MHz ... it's within 1 Hz. I do think that I would
use the Flex quite a bit on HF.
I am the I.T. guy in our company so I am very familiar with all aspects
of computers. I would much rather click & drag then twist knobs & push
buttons. I was greatly impressed with the performance of the Flex radio on
HF. It's use with the demo software was totally intuitive and I think I
would have it up and running within an hour. Right now it's a toss up
between the Elecraft K-3 and the Flex. I'm also thinking about taking
another look at the flex in about 6 months ... they are devoloping another
suite of software for it.
In the meantime, I've been working on my loop. In the September of 2000
issue of QST, I had an article entitled "The Monster Loop". I've used this
and the AMRAD E-Field probe for the last several years and up until about a
year ago, both performed well (well actually, the E-Field probe always
outperformed my loop) but lately the loop has quit working entirely. Turned
out the watertight box with the capacitors, switching relays & varactor
tuning diodes was full of water. Somehow insects got into the box, died and
clogged the two weep holes I drilled in the bottom to let the water out. I
have to admit, the box was really watertight now ... but from the inside
out. I redesigned & rebuilt the box ... but now I can't get out there to
work because there's 30 inches of snow around the shed where the loop is
mounted.
Thanks for the replies & for listening to my saga.
