I have moved beacon "IO" in western Maryland to 185299.2 Hz. It looks like
this may be a clearer spot. If anyone has been listening for something on
that freq, let me know and I'll QSY again. Fortunately my signal seems to
be so weak it's not going to bother anyone.
This is my first attempt at setting up a beacon on 1750M - and I'm learning
as I go. I really need to turn my loading coil into a variometer - the
finest tap I left when I wound the coil was 2 turns and I get wild
variations on my rf ampmeter from just 2 turns difference. Right now the
antenna and loading coil is a mess of alligator clips and strewn across the
deck - cleaning things up may help too.
My meter shows about 22ma of RF current - I believe this is way short of
what would be expected. Properly tuning the antenna when I finish the
variometer mod should help a lot.
For a while I had the bottom of my loading coil hooked to ground, and tapped
the feed point several turns up. Since that created two points to tune, I
removed the connection to ground and now I just have the loading coil in
series between the feed and antenna. I've read various articles about
antennas - and both methods seem OK. Does anyone have any suggestions in
this matter? If I left the ground connection on the coil, how do I tune the
feed separately from the antenna?
Give a listen on 185299.2 - any reception reports are welcome! I'm still
not 100% sure of my frequency, so feel free to "look around" a bit too.
Thanks!
Craig
