Be sure to read the rest of this document as you start to make WSPR mode
QSOs! Please send comments and suggestions to k1jt @ arrl.net.
Background: WSPR mode was created in March 2008. The name is
pronounced “whisper,” which seems appropriate for a mode designed for
extremely weak signals; it is an acronym for “Weak Signal Propagation
Reporter,” and has come to be used for both the protocol and a computer
program that implements it. The protocol was developed for beacon-like
signals originating from QRP transmitters on the LF, MF, and HF bands,
but also with an eye toward its possible use for making QSOs with very
weak signals.

I was told recently that Joe - K1JT was an advocate of QRP on Low
Frequencies, and seeing this paragraph in the user manual of the WSJT
program that includes the WSPR QSO Mode; convinced me to go back to
what was working...An out of country ham recommended that I add a US
ITU prefix to the front of the " made up " call. That sounds like a
reasonable idea, so I'll change the call in the WSPR program to show:
K4/XR4TN... Already tried it, and it works OK, you just have to decode
the callsign twice for it to read out in the WSPR window or all you'll
see is the <...> hash code. That in itself is no big deal, because the
frequency readout will let anyone know they received my signal anyway.
Also; I was surprised with, and pleased by, the performance of WSPR on
1750 meters so far this winter..Looking at other digimodes modes,
there dosen't seem to be any, other than WOLF, that will readily
outperform WSPR.. Those that can, all require extreme frequency stability
which I don't have at the moment... WSPR is a turn it on, and let it go
program. The software does all the work for you. Could it get any easier than that ?? As far as WSPRnet is concerned; I'm not going to worry about
it. If the " DATA Scrubber " deletes the spots of my signal; no biggie !!
Everyone posts their reception reports on the list, and that's enough
for me...
Barring any problems, I'll have the beacon back on tonite in WSPR mode.
And other than a test of another mode, that's what I'll stick with for
this DX season... The usual info: Dial: 184.200 KHz - USB, Operation is
planned for every night - TFN.
Thanks everyone, and a happy, and prosperous New Year to all:
