Hi Gillis,

The first, best, clue is checking for thunderstorm activity, 
which is responsible for most airborne LF noise.  There are a 
number of sites but the tried and true favourite for North 
America is:

The fewer little ziggy-zaggies on the screen the better!

Daytime, any within a few hundred miles is bad news, 
night-time you will hear ANY that are visible.
