Hi Jay:
Disclaimer first: The radio was a gift to me from another ham,
but was in need of repair. During repair is when I found out that
it would transmit at LF. I have no Idea who did; or what mod they
did, to get the radio to transmit on any frequency.
All my testing, and measurements are crude, and not lab order.
I use what I have, and can do. With all that said;
The first thing I did was to check for harmonics. I used the
TS450 S-meter as an indicator. On frequency, the meter would
read 45 dB over S-9... just using a short wire for a pick up ant.
On the first harmonic frequency, the meter dropped to an S-3..
On the second harmonic frequency, no meter reading, and barely
discernable signal in the background... This test done with the
radio conected to a 4 foot coax jumper, into my Radio Shack
Watt / SWR meter with a 25 watt dummy load connected directly
to the meter.
*** How ever accurate the power test may be; the meter shows
1-1/2 watts output into the 50 Ohm dummy load MAX, and distorted,
using a 1500 cycle tone. For a clean output, it shows .75 watts .
I can connect the radio directly to the 50 Ohm LPF, and see
60 mW of RF current on the RF ammeter running wide open........
I connected the radio output thru a .33µF cap to the input of the
Class " D " amp, and got 90 mW of RF thru it.. Disappointment !!
Connecting the radio to the audio amp gave me some fun over
the weekend... I tried to be as short, but descriptive as possible.
