Hi Dex, Lowfers,

Been there, done that.  Frustrating at the very least and a good catalyst for the emission of expletives!
Mine was an open in the centre conductor of a length of 1/2 inch heliax.  I was lucky in that the open
was at the base of a tower.  I conducted an autopsy on the bad section and discovered an amazing
thing.  Over a length of about a foot the inner conductor just dwindled down to a fine point and then
after a small gap it grew back to its proper diameter again.  A production flaw, possibly?
