Hi Rick,
I'm not sure if we have conversed before about your Ashlock Loop. Can you tell us about the dimensions, conductor diameter, conductor RAC if possible (or just the loop current at a 1w transmitter output)? Is your soil there quite rocky? I think I reported last season about the poor effective radiation from my Ellsworth NH mountain site versus the same loop here in Andover, MA, so I'm anxious to see if you experience similar results.
I have also tried to use Class E finals with my loops but found they are quite frequency sensitive and require retuning whenever the loop configuration is changed. When I run comparitive antenna tests I can't afford to introduce non-antenna related variables and the Class D final requires no tuning except for the loop resonating capacitor. It's also really hard to beat the simplicity in setting up a Class D final and verifying performance by looking for a neat square wave. Also don't let anyone tell you that you need an output filter at this low power level.
Happy looping!
Bill Ashlock
