[Lowfer] Definitely did something wrong !! " I think "

On the vari-coil and placement...of course the idea is to use the mutual inductance interactively between both coild for buck/boost action. So the further apart the coils are the less interaction. But in your case it doesn't appear to be too large a separation, being at the top of the main, lower coil. Still the interaction may have been compromised by the relocation and reduced turns, as you report.

As a test, remove the vari-coil from its mount and try lowering it from a non-inductive rod. See if the prior good results return.

The combined L should remain the same for resonance, as a fall back basis. Asume a measurement on coil Ls being made.

GL, and pse. report your results, Andy.

(Mike, tsk, tsk  ;-)

Hey all:

Well I thought I would try re-do'ing my Variometer, and boy
is it out of whack now !! Mistake #1 ( I knew better, but did
it anyway ), I made too many changes to the setup at one time.
So I don't know which one killed my output. All together I;
drilled holes in the vari-coil coffee can, and the paint bucket.
I took some windings off the vari-coil ( had almost 1 mH on it )
