Here's a little trick that many have tried, and it works
until you can do better; Unscrew the coax shield on the
rig, and pull the cable out to where just the center pin
makes connection. Sometimes this can make the lower band
" Come Alive " Tip #2 ** If you have any inductors of any
kind, molded , wirewound, power supply chokes, etc; use
clip leads to connect one between the ant center pin, and
a jumper into the rig. If you insert the inductor and your
receive level comes up; GREAT !!, if not, lay it aside.
Find the inductor that will give you the best improvement
in receive, and use it. If using a dipole antenna, clip
across both the center pin, and the shield to use the
entire antenna as a " non-resonant wire " .
Tip #3 *** If you have a variable capacitor on hand, connect
it to the antenna side of the inductor and run it to ground.
This will also give you some tuning capabilities on the ant.
If your variable dosen,t have enough capacitance, then try
to parallel some fixed caps to it. If your variable has too
much capacitance, put some fixed value in series with the
variable to lower the capacitance value.
These simple, and probably already on hand items might just
give you better receive than you would imagine.
