Hi Everyone:
It's been a while for this thread but I thought I'd update folks on
what I've learned about this radio.
When I initially fired it up, the meter light came on, but nothing
else. It turns out the speaker plug, which comes out of the back of
the radio and into a 1/8" jack has a bad connection. Everything else
seems to work. I didn't see how much RF I could make, because I don't
have a meter that reads that low, but it draws current corresponding
to where the RF power knob is set... I'll have to look ito seeing if I
can get a slug for my bird wattmeter for it- or something. I ran my
signal generator into the radio and it hears fine, and I connected it
to a dummy load and listened to it on another radio and it talks fine
too. The frequency adjust knob has a detent in the middle, and that
freq is something like 185.00. It has blankers, regenration and
bandwidth knobs, and they all appear to function. It's a fairly nice
radio- now to get it on an antenna and try to use it.
In the meantime, I've bought and built the Jackson Harbor Press
receive converter. At night while playing with other projects, I
listen to NDBs through my 40m dipole. I've heard several, and my best
DX is either Pickle Lake (YPL) or Thunder Bay in Canada- which seems
okay for not much antenna. WE0H's 505KHz beacon was pretty loud the
other night, of course. Last night 6 meters was open too from EN34 to
4-land- but that's off-topic.
I'm working on gathering the parts for a transmit converter too, but
while I'm doing that, I have been experimenting with the Epson
oscillators and K0LR's Simple Lowfer Transmitter. When I connect the
oscillator to the divider, I don't get any signal out of the divider
end- but I'm not sure what to alter in the cicuit. The schematic shows
a crystal of course- so what must be changed to make the epson
oscillator work in the circuit, or is there another transmitter
circuit used when an epson oscillator is used? My scope should see it,
right, or do I have to build the amp first? If anyone has some advice
here, I'm all ears. (However, at my bench, I'm all thumbs-hi).
Thanks-
Andy-K0AJL

Also up your way was Lyle who put out great signals with which one could test rx setups. Several times I heard his sig audibly. Hope to see Roger, up north, return to his good showings too.
