Hi John, Joe, da rest...

Just a bit on "dogbones" here. Most noticable a problem for me was those at pear season on 137. Then unless the gain is reduced it was more like picket fences!! But dogbones were only an occasional matter on 185. There it was almost a sense of pride that the system was performing well. The gain (sensitivity slider on Argo) was kept so that some background snow was present.

At present my rx system is QRT. Hope that will change.

Joe,

Too high an audio level will cause the FFT results to spill into 
adjacent frequency bins and widen the trace on the screen. Simply 
backing off the input level to Argo (or whatever program you use), will 
thin out the lines and reduce background noise. BUT, you might lose the 
trace altogether in a fade, so it's reasonable to let things bloom out a 
bit on the signal peaks.
