In the days of yesteryear, broadcast stations used remote control
systems that could trim Xmtr power levels, switch antennas, read
meters remotely, and it was done over what used to be called a
" Dry Pair " or " DC Continuity " circuit, these are still known
as Burglar Alarm circuits. The studio unit would send a very low
frequency tone to the remote unit. Each channel ( how ever many
the unit had ) would have its own tone for up/down, raise/lower,
on/off, whatever you labeled it to do. The remote unit responded
to the tone sent, and would operate an approriate relay for the
function to be carried out. They were big and bulky, but worked
very well. There are still alot of them out there; and could
probably be " Picked Up " literally !! just to get them out of
the way. A run of phone line from the shack to the antenna could
make for lots of possibilities.

Todays solution is Dial-up remotes that use a regular phone line,
and pretty expensive remote control units.
