Bill,
Thanks, two thoughts on why the long haul signals seem to be
better than the local signals:
1) Perhaps there is less background static at the moment in Europe and
Russia than here.
2) Something (D-Layer ionospheric cloud?) may be directly overhead
absorbing the high angle signals characteristic of short hop
propagation, and leaving the low angle stuff untouched.
