Garry,

It's probably the old East-West vs. North-South thing. Lyle and others in the north central U.S. frequently reported good reception of beacons to the south, while here in the east, we weren't copying anything. 

LF propagation should be excellent right now, but obviously limited by noise and short nights. Thanks for the try.
