An SSB exciter would be needed to translate the sound card audio up to
the desired radio frequency. But since WSPR works by frequency shift
keying, and only one tone is present at a time, linear amplification is
not required once the RF signal is created.
Actually, for this mode you could dispense with SSB generator if you
could program a DDS chip to do the proper shifts in the right sequence.
